You can determine the way settings are applied and the way results are displayed in various translation windows.

Use the Editor settings to specify:
  • What happens when Trados Studio is started
  • What settings are applied when you open a file for translation in the Editor view
  • How documents are displayed in the Editor window
  • What formatting is used to show tracked changes in the Editor window
  • What formatting is used to show differences in the Translation Results window

To display the Editor settings, select File > Options from the Ribbon, and then select Editor from the navigation tree in the Options dialog.

These settings determine what happens each time you start the application.

Automatically re-open previously edited documents

When selected, the application automatically re-opens all files that were open the last time you closed Trados Studio.

Prompt me to re-open previously edited documents

When selected, you will be asked whether you want to re-open the files that were open when you closed Trados Studio.

Do not automatically re-open previously edited documents

When selected, files are not re-opened automatically and you are not asked if you want to re-open them.

This is the default setting.

Automatically copy source content to target cells when opening documents

When selected, the content of source segments is automatically copied to target segments when you open a file for the first time. If this option is not selected, the target segments are empty when the file opens in the Editor window.

These settings affect the way documents are displayed in the Editor window.
Show segment numbers

When selected, segment numbers are displayed.

Show whitespace characters

When selected, whitespace characters appear as symbols in the document text. These characters include, for example, spaces, non-breaking spaces, tabs and line breaks.

Show document structure information

When selected, a code is displayed beside each segment. The code indicates where in the file the segment text occurred. For example, the segment text could be a heading or a footnote. Place the cursor over the code to see a full description of the code.

Customize colors

A different color is assigned to each document structure type. For example, codes that indicate headings are displayed on a pale blue background. To change the default colors, select a structure type from the first box and a color from one of the tabs in the second box. The following are the three tabs that are displayed when you click the down arrow: Custom, Web and System.

  • Select the Custom tab to display a color palette. Select a color in the palette and the color is applied to the currently selected screen component. If the color you want to use is not displayed here, right-click one of the blank, colorless squares at the bottom of the tab to display the Color dialog where you can create your own custom color.
  • Select the Web tab to display a list of colors which can be used in web pages. Select a color and the color is applied to the currently selected screen component.
  • Select the System tab to display a list of Microsoft screen components and colors assigned to the components. Select a color/component combination and the color is applied to the currently selected Trados Studio screen component.
Formatting display style

Specify how you want the document text to be displayed:

  • Show all formatting and tags - When this option is selected, formatting is applied to segment text and the formatting tags themselves are displayed. For example, text that is tagged as bold is displayed in bold and the bold formatting tag pair is also displayed.
  • Show formatting but hide recognized formatting tags - When this option is selected, text is formatted correctly but standard formatting tags (for example, bold, italic, and font type) are not displayed. This is the default setting.
  • Show all tags but do not show formatting - When this option is selected, text in the Editor window is displayed as plain text but with formatting tags. For example, text that is tagged as bold, does not have bold formatting applied but the bold formatting tags are displayed.
Group adjacent tags in formatting window

When you press Ctrl+ , (comma), tags present in the source segment are listed below the target segment. When you select a tag from the drop-down list, Trados Studio inserts it into the target segment. When the Group adjacent tags in formatting window option is selected, adjacent placeholder tags are grouped together in a single item in the QuickPlace drop-down list or in the QuickPlace dialog. This means that you can insert them all into the target segment with a single selection. Adjacent tags are tags that appear in a sequence and have no text between them.

Enable implicit row activation

When this option is selected, when you place your cursor in a segment, it automatically becomes the active row . When a row is active you can edit the target segment and a lookup is automatically performed in the TM, automated translation server and termbase. If this option is not selected, you have to manually activate the row in the Editor view by going to Home > Navigation > Translation > Activate Row.

Center active row

When a row is activated, it is automatically placed in the center of the Editor.

Hide file tags

For a less cluttered user interface in the Editor, you can hide the file tags in merged files. This applies to both virtually and physically merged files, but also to files with embedded content

Smart cut and paste

This option automatically adjusts leading and trailing white spaces when moving or copying and pasting text. Also, when removing text before a punctuation mark, the remaining blank space is removed.

When you close a file with unreviewed segments:

  • In open for review mode, Trados Studio asks you to approve and set to Translation Approved all the unreviewed segments in the file. Any segments that do not have a status of Translation Approved or Translation Rejected are classified as not being reviewed.
  • In open for sign-off mode, Trados Studio asks you to approve and set to Signed Off all the segments in the file. If you select Yes, Trados Studio will complete the sign-off process by approving all the segments in the file, including those set to Sign Off Rejected.

When you close a file that contains translation quality assessments (TQAs), Trados Studio displays a dialog with an overview of all TQAs available in the file. Here you can make an overall evaluation of the file. The Complete Review dialog allows you to override the Pass/Fail result that Trados Studio calculated automatically based on the TQA configuration available for your project. You can also specify the type of file that you are reviewing or signing off and add a general evaluation comment. These details are also available when you generate a Translation Quality Assessment report for the current file.

When you have TQA review mode activated, and delete or add a quality assessment item straight in the Editor, moving the focus from the translation segment you have made changes to will trigger the TQA details window for you to fill in. Enabling this checkbox will also show you a dialog containing instructions on why does the TQA details pops-up. It can be deactivated after the first appearance if it loses relevance.

Enable AutoSave

Specify if and how often you want Trados Studio to automatically save your pending changes. To be extra safe, choose to autosave more frequently, for example every five minutes. This way, you will never lose more than five minutes of work. On the other hand, if you want to make Trados Studio faster, choose to autosave less often, for example every 20 minutes.
