Managing TUs

The translation units (TUs) which make up the translation memories (TMs) can be maintained accurate and relevant through a continuous process of editing and deleting.

You edit TUs in the TM side-by-side editor window in the Translation Memories view. You can only edit TUs in the . You can edit TUs in the following ways:
  • Edit the content of both source and target language segments.
  • Assign values to custom fields or change the currently assigned values.
  • Delete TUs.
  • Use Find and Replace and Copy and Paste to update TU text.
  • Use batch tools to edit or delete multiple TUs automatically.

Changes are not effective immediately, so you have to save (commit) changes in order to make them permanent.

TU status

When you edit or delete a TU, the background color of the TU changes and an icon appears in the Translation Unit Status column (to the left of the source segment). The icon indicates the current status of the segment:

This indicates that the TU has been edited, but the changes have not yet been committed. The change could be a change to the TU text or to the values stored in custom fields for the TU.

This indicates that the TU has been marked for deletion but the deletion has not yet been committed.

Committing TM Changes

When you commit TM changes, all pending changes in the TM side-by-side editor window are saved to the TM. Once you have committed a change, it cannot be undone.

The Commit Changes option of the Translation Memories view enables you to:
  • Commit Changes and Re-Apply Search, to have the last item you edited automatically searched, after you commit your changes to the TM.
  • Commit Changes and Clear Search, to commit your changes to the TM, without having the last item you edited automatically searched. This functionality is available as of Trados Studio 2018.
