Specifying TMs for all language pairs (general rule)

As a general rule, you select your TMs at the All Language Pairs level, which means that the selected TMs apply to all the language pairs they contain. However, you can also specify TMs at an individual language pair level, as an exception.

About this task

Use individual language pairs only if you want to have different TM selections, a different TM order or different lookup, or update and concordance settings for an individual language pair.

Here is an example which points out the difference between specifying TMs at all language pair level or at individual language pair level. Suppose you add a multilingual translation memory at the All Language Pairs level that contains English to German and English to French language pairs. However, you do not want to use this translation memory for English to French and instead want to select another translation memory. To do that, select the translation memory that you want to use at the individual language pair settings instead of the All Language Pairs level.

Procedure

  1. Decide whether you want to specify TMs:
    • For all future projects - Go to File > Options > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs.
    • For the current project - Go to the Projects view, select a project. On the Home tab, select Project Settings, and then in the Project Settings dialog, select Language Pairs > All Language Pairs.
The Language Pairs settings are displayed on the right. Any language pairs for which default translation memory selections have been added, are displayed in the Language Pairs box.
  2. Select Translation Memory and Automated Translation from the navigation tree.
  3. Select your TMs:
    • If you want to add an existing TM, select Use, and then select either File-based Translation Memory or Server-based Translation Memory from the drop-down list.
    • If you want to create a new TM, select Create File-based Translation Memory, or expand the drop-down list and select Create Server-based Translation Memory.
  4. Select or clear the checkboxes in the Lookup, Penalty, Concordance and Update columns.
  5. Use the Up and Down arrows to change the order of the TMs.
  6. Select OK to close the dialog.
