Translating with Machine Translation (MT)

Machine translation (MT) is translation performed by computer software. The application that provides MT is installed on a server or in the cloud and is accessed in a similar way to a server-based translation memory (TM).

You can use MT providers on a subscription basis. MT providers can increase your translation and pre-translation results both at quantity and quality level.

If you are connected to an MT provider, when you place your cursor in a segment in the Editor window and the TM cannot provide a 100% match or a fuzzy match for a segment, the system resorts to the MT suggestions for the segment. The MT suggestion is automatically inserted into the segment and you can then further edit the translation text.

The MT feature can also be used during pre-translation.

When results are returned from an MT provider, the name of the translation provider is displayed at the bottom of the Translation Results window.

MT providers in Trados Studio

Trados Studio can connect to Neural Machine Translation (NMT) engines that you subscribed to viaLanguage Weaver. Besides Language Weaver, Trados Studio can access many other Automated Translation providers, including DeepL and Language Weaver Edge.

To find and install new Machine Translation providers, go to the Add-ins tab > RWS AppStore and seach for apps in the Automated translation category.

Machine Translation Quality Estimation

A powerful tool when using MT on cloud projects is the Machine Translation Quality Estimation (MTQE) feature, which helps you better assess the translation results that are perfect, and the ones that require editing.

MTQE can be accessed from the Editor view, under the TQE button on the right side of your screen. The results are preprocessed in the cloud or by supporting MT providers.

MTQE is available for cloud projects, but you can use it offline by downloading preprocessed SDLXLIFF files. To use MTQE, you need a subscription to a machine translation provider with quality estimation, custom workflows based on Trados Enterprise or Accelerate, and Trados Studio as a desktop client and online editor.
