Updating the TM with translations from a group of files

You can perform a manual update on your translation memory (TM), by adding new translations only from some of the files in a project.

About this task

Before you start, decide if you want to update the main TMs or project TMs. For example, you may want to update the main TM if you are working with a single file for translation or if you are a project manager. You may want to update the project TMs if you want to leverage previously translated content from one file to the next file in the project.

Procedure

  1. Go to the Projects view, and then, on the Home tab, select Batch Tasks and one of the following options:
    • Update Main Translation Memories
    • Update Project Translation Memories
  2. The Batch Processing wizard is displayed on the Batch Tasks page. Select Next.
  3. On the Files page, consult all the files for the active project. If the files list is not correct, close the Batch Processing wizard and follow the instructions on Updating the TM from a group of files instead.
  4. Select Next.
  5. On the Settings page, in the If target segments differ section, select how the application treats new translation units (TUs) that have the same source segment as an existing TU:
    OptionDescription
    Add new translations units

Adds translations as new TUs to the TMS. This means that the existing TUs in the TM are not overwritten.

    Overwrite existing translation units

Imports the new TUs and overwrites the existing TUs in the TM.

    Leave translation units unchanged

Keeps the existing TUs and does not import the new ones. For server-based TMs, this option is only available if the TM you are updating is available on an Trados GroupShare server, version 2014 SP2 or later.

    Keep most recent translation units

Keeps the most recently changed TU. Trados Studio imports a TU whose source segment is identical to that of an existing TU only if the imported unit is newer than the existing one. If the change date of the TU for import is older than the change date of the existing one, Trados Studio does not replace the existing TU. For server-based TMs, this option is only available if the TM you are updating is available on a Trados GroupShare server, version 2014 SP2 or later.

  6. In the Segment status section, select which translations are added to the TM. This defaults to segments that are fully translated and approved (Translated, Translation Approved and Signed Off).
  7. In the navigation tree , select Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Translation Memory and Automated Translation > Update. In the Field Values box, consult the values that will be appended to each new translation added to this TM. Select different values if required.
  8. When finished working with task settings, select Next.
  9. When the selected task/task sequence is complete, if you want to view the task results, display them in a report or save them to a file, select the task, and then Task Results to display the Task Results dialog.
    • The complete icon indicates that the task completed successfully.
    • The message error icon indicates that the task failed because of errors.
  10. Select Close when you finish working with the task results.
Any reports generated from the batch task are displayed in the Reports view.
