Upgrading legacy or non-reindexed file-based TMs
You must upgrade one or several file-based translation memories (TMs) which you have not used in a long time, whose TM settings you changed or which you imported from an Trados Studio version which is earlier than the latest release version.
Upgrading legacy file-based TMs
You can use the Upgrade Translation Memories wizard to upgrade legacy TMs, *.tmx files and *.txt files (SDL Workbench or WinAlign Export) to the Trados Studio format (*.sdltm). You can upgrade legacy TMs from SDLX and SDL Trados 2007 format. For detailed information, see the Trados Studio 2024 Migration Guide. You can use an RWS AppStore app like TM Optimizer to remove unwanted tag content from the legacy translation memories (TMs) and increase the performance of the import and the leveraging in Trados Studio. After you install TM Optimizer, select the legacy TM you want to clean and import. The app will create a new optimized version that you can then use with Trados Studio.
Upgrading non-reindexed file-based TMs
To benefit from the latest TM capabilities: more accurate context matches, full or half-width fuzzy matches, optimal fragment alignment and reindexing, you MUST upgrade your TM. The TMs which require an upgrade are identified by the non-upgraded TM icon (a warning triangle).
If you want to use TMs, which were created in an earlier Trados Studio version (these are typically the ones created in 2015 and 2017 versions), in a more recent Trados Studio version (these are typically 2017 SR1, 2019, 2019 SR1 versions or higher), you MUST upgrade them. Earlier TMs will be recognized and read by Trados Studio, but you will not be able to use them to their fullest potential.

- Upgrade file-based TMs from project settings - Use this option when you are currently using the TM in your project and you want/need to upgrade it for better translation results.
