Using AI Assistant to your Project as a Terminology-Aware Translation Provider

In this task, we will add and use the GPT-4o connection created above to our project as a translation provider.

About this task

We will explain how to use it with the help of the sample project shipped with Trados Studio, using the English-German version of the photo printer sample document.

Procedure

  1. On the Projects view, activate the sample project in Trados Studio.
    The project name appears in bold.
  2. On the Home ribbon, click Project Settings.
    This opens the project settings for the sample project.
  3. Under Translation Memory and Automated Translation, select Use > OpenAI provider for Trados. This opens the Settings dialog box for the OpenAI Provider.
    This will list any available connections we created earlier, in our example My First Open AI LLM Connection using the gpt-4o model. Keep this connection selected.
  4. In the Search Options group box, select Enable Terminology Aware Translation Suggestions. We will use an example where we can show how this option can enhance translation suggestions with your own terminology.
  5. Under Prompts, select the Refine translation prompt. We will use this prompt in our example as it can use translated terms.
  6. Select OK to confirm the settings, then OK to confirm the overall translation provider settings for the sample project. We are now ready to use this prompt in our translation work. However, before doing so, let us make a change to a term in the termbase so we can see how that impacts AI-generated translation suggestions.
  7. Go to segment 5. This will not display any suggestion but will allow us to edit the term that we want to change for making translation suggestions terminology-aware. Let's assume we wish to use a different term than Fotodrucker in the translation suggestions from the provider. The term photo printer -> Fotodrucker is displayed in the term recognition window for segment 5. Edit this term and change the German translation to Fotodruckmaschine. Make these changes in the Termbase Viewer as you usually would. The term entry should now read photo printer -> Fotodruckmaschine .
  8. Now go to segment 2. This will display two fuzzy matches from the translation memory - we can ignore these for the purposes of this example. Let's instead look at the third translation suggestion from the OpenAI provider. You will see that this suggestion no longer uses Fotodrucker as you would normally expect. Rather it uses our modified term suggestion Fotodruckmaschine and has also adapted the gender as this is a female gender form. If you go to any other segment in the sample document, you will see that this new term is now used everywhere. The same will happen with any other term you change in your termbase. This works for any termbase you use - a local MultiTerm termbase, a server-based termbase in GroupShare, or a cloud-based termbase.
  9. Adding the translation provider in this way also enables you to run batch processes on your translation documents. In particular, the Pre-Translate Files batch task will be able to use any prompt and terminology you specifiy in the OpenAI provider settings.
