Using TM and MT providers with AutoSuggest

Translation memories (TMs) and Machine Translation (MT) providers enhance your AutoSuggest result list, giving you more translation options and less post-editing hassle.

Before you begin

  1. When using TM and MT providers, RWS recommends that you deactivate the Case Sensitive option from the AutoSuggest settings page (File > Options > AutoSuggest) to ensure that matching suggestions are displayed regardless of whether you start typing a word with a lower case or an upper case letter. This option is disabled by default, but be sure to check that out.
  2. Ensure that the matching sources to be considered by AutoSuggest have Enabled and Lookup enabled in the current project settings. The automatic translation provider does not need Lookup enabled to trigger matches.

About this task

As soon as you start typing a new word, AutoSuggest will look up matches for the current segment and display suggestions based on your settings. Different icons to the left of each proposal indicate their origin:

  • for exact TM match
  • for fuzzy TM match
  • for machine translation
  • for concordance match

Procedure

  1. Go to File > Options > AutoSuggest > Translation Memory and Automated Translation.
  2. Under Include suggestions for the following match types, specify which match types should be considered for AutoSuggest:
    • Exact translation memory matches
    • Fuzzy translation memory matches
    • Automated translations - This refers to both the on-the-fly MT and the MT pre-translated segments stored in a TM.
    • Concordance matches - When selecting this, the Perform search if the TM lookup returns no results option from the Concordance Search Window is also enabled.
  3. By default, Trados Studio displays one-word or multiple-word suggestions when you start typing. Under Minimum suggestion length in words, you can increase the suggestion value if you want only multiple-word suggestions to be offered.
  4. By default, Trados Studio will display suggestions after you typed at least 3 starting characters of a word. Under Minimum number of characters typed before displaying suggestions, you can adjust this setting if you want to get suggestions after having typed any other number of characters.
  5. Select OK.
