Using Trados Terminology in Trados Studio

To use cloud termbases during translation, add Trados Terminology termbases to your project resources.

Before you begin

Make sure you are logged in with the correct cloud account (Trados Terminology) from within Trados Studio.

Procedure

  1. Do one of the following:
    • For existing projects, go to the Projects view, select Project Settings, and then on the Project Settings page, go to Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Termbases
    • For all future projects, go to File > Options > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Termbases
  2. Select Use > Cloud-based Terminology.
  3. Make sure you are logged in with the correct cloud account.
  4. On the cloud Terminology Settings page, select the check boxes corresponding to the termbases you want to use in your project from the My termbases or Shared with me lists.
  5. If you have edit permission over the Trados Terminology termbases you work with, and you select the Update button for these termbases, the termbases are updated with your latest changes on the fly. Your changes are immediately available to all users.
  6. Choose the type of term search and define the term search settings:
    • Linguistic search - Searches text or terms which are similar to or a sub-part of the search term. Linguistic search is recommended for best accuracy. For example, if you enter a derived word, linguistic search retrieves all the terms based on that word's stem (or root).
    • Fuzzy search - Searches text or terms which are similar to or a sub-part of the search term, but is more fault-tolerant than linguistic search.
    • Show recognized terms with no available translation - Select this if you want Trados Studio to display a recognized term even if the term does not have a translation in the termbase.
    • Enable recognition of two-letter terms - By default, terms that consist of two letters only are not searched for in the termbase automatically as this can lead to too many irrelevant results. However, you may want to select this option if your source document contains two-letter acronyms, such as the UN (United Nations).
    • Allow overlapping terms - When enabled, if the source segment has overlapping terms in the termbase, these are nonetheless displayed in the Term Recognition window. The option is disabled by default.

See the Terminology settings topic for more information on the available options.

  7. Select OK.
  8. Back in Trados Studio consult the termbases you added. When the Enabled option is selected for the termbase, the termbase is automatically searched during translation when a segment becomes the active segment.
  9. Make sure the appropriate language for each termbase is set in the Languages pane for each project language. Each language must be mapped to a language in the termbase.
  10. Select OK to save your changes and close the dialog.

Synchronizing termbase search settings

Make sure to set the same termbase search settings for the MultiTerm and cloud termbases you use for your projects. If you specify different term search settings for these, the settings specified for searching through MultiTerm termbases will take precedence over the termbase search settings specified for cloud termbases.

Procedure

  1. Do one of the following:
    • For existing projects, go to the Projects view, select Project Settings, and then on the Project Settings page, go to Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Termbases
    • For all future projects, go to File > Options > Language Pairs > All Language Pairs > Termbases
  2. On the Termbases page, go to Use > Cloud-based Terminology and select Settings. Enable your cloud termbase and specify the settings for the last three Term Search recognition options at the bottom of the page. Select OK to close the Cloud-based Terminology window.
  3. Back in the Termbases tree, select the Search Settings node and make sure to define the same search settings for MultiTerm file-based and cloud termbases.

Viewing cloud termbase lookups

You can perform cloud lookups during translation as you would do with MultiTerm lookups. However, if you add a term to your cloud termbase (Trados Terminology) during translation, the term you have just added will show up in the lookups with a delay ranging from a couple of seconds to a couple of minutes. Adding a term to a cloud termbase during translation will not result in the instantaneous retrieval of this term in the lookups.
