Creating projects from Trados Studio

You can create cloud projects from Trados Studio and manage them in Trados Team.

Before you begin

Make sure that you created (and configured) your file type configurations, your linguistic resources and your project templates in Trados Team so that they are visible for selection in Trados Studio. The Trados Studio cloud project creation wizard can redirect your to Trados Team so you can create new resources, but the process can be time-consuming.

To download Trados Studio, create an account and either register for a free trial or buy a license.

About this task

  • If you are an administrator or a lead project manager, you can create cloud projects from Trados Studio 2021 (or higher), but you cannot perform any project management or administrative activities from Trados Studio (work on Project Planning tasks, create project resources, reassign users, invite users into your account, assign roles and so on).
  • If you are a project manager, you can create cloud projects from Trados Studio 2021 (or higher), but you cannot perform any project management or administrative activities from Trados Studio (work on Project Planning tasks, create project resources, reassign users and so on).

Procedure

  1. Open Trados Studio and log in with your Trados Team from within Trados Studio.
  2. In Trados Studio, go to the Projects view.
  3. In the ribbon, expand the New Project menu and select New Cloud Project. The cloud project creation wizard opens up. Note that you can perform this operation from Manager view as well.
  4. On the General page:
    1. Enter a project name.
    2. Enter a due date and time.
    3. Decide if you want to create a project from scratch or based on a project template.
      • If you do not choose a project template, the default project settings (which come with the system) apply.
      • If you choose a project template, all the fields will be populated with the project template information. You can keep this information as such, or modify it.
      • If you choose New Project Template, you are redirected to Trados Team where you can add a new project template. When you return to Trados Studio, select the Refresh button next to the Project Template field, so you can choose the newly added project template.
    4. Choose an available location or select New Location.
      • If you are a project manager, you can only select one of the available locations. You cannot add a new location.
      • If you choose New Location, you are redirected to Trados Team where you can add a new location (customer). When you return to Trados Studio, select the Refresh button next to the Location field, so you can choose the newly added location.
    5. Add language pairs.
    6. Select Add Files and select the translatable and the reference files. You can also create projects with *.sdlxliff files.
  5. On the Translation Resources page, choose an available translation engine or select New Translation Engine.
    • If you choose New Translation Engine, you are redirected to Trados Team where you can add a new translation engine (and its components: translation memories, termbases). When you return to Trados Studio, select the Refresh button next to the Translation Engine field, so you can choose the newly added translation engine.
  6. On the Workflows page, choose an available workflow or select New Workflow.
    • If you choose an existing workflow, you can check its details. If you want to edit the workflow, select Open in Cloud, which redirects you to the cloud environment.
    • If you choose New Workflow, you are redirected to Trados Team where you can add a workflow and perform assignments. When you return to Trados Studio, select the Refresh button next to the Workflow field, so you can choose the newly added workflow.
  7. On the Summary page, consult your project overall details.
  8. Select Finish.
  9. In the Notifications area, check the status of your cloud project upload (Preparing & uploading project to Language Cloud).
  10. When the upload is complete, check that your project is uploaded in the cloud environment:
    • Use the Language Cloud link in the notification to return to Trados Team.
    • On the ribbon, select Open in Cloud. You are redirected to Trados Team.
  11. Your project is downloaded locally and it is started (In progress) in both Trados Studio and Trados Team. If you switch to Trados Team and make some changes there, when you return to Trados Studio, on the ribbon, select the Refresh button to ensure you have the latest changes locally.

What to do next

You cannot perform project management activities from Trados Studio. Go to Trados Team to perform them.

You cannot perform project management activities from Trados Studio, but you can start working on your translations:
  1. Monitor the Notifications pane, and when prompted select Start work, and then Open in Files view.
  2. Double-click the file (which is assigned to you and accept for you automatically behind scenes) and translate it.
  3. When finished, on the ribbon select Complete Task.
  4. If you later decide that you still need to work on your file, you can revert the completed translation and resume your work.
