Adding the root map to a publication

The root map is the single map at the top of the publication's content hierarchy. It contains all the other maps and topics. The first thing you add to a publication is the root map.

Before you begin

This task requires that:
  • You have an empty publication open in Publication Manager.
  • The Repository contains at least one map.

About this task

DITA standards require that you have exactly one root map to your publication, and Publication Manager implements that requirement by making the root map mandatory. Because the root map contains the entire body of your publication, name it accordingly and make sure that the Description property for that map describes the expected deliverable clearly. Remember that it could be used in publications either as root map or as standard map.

Procedure

  1. In Publication Manager, right-click the publication object and select Add > Map.
  2. In the browse dialog, locate the map you want to use as root map. You will find it in a type of folder that contains only maps.
  3. Select the map name then Add.

The map is added to the publication as root map. You are now ready to add other maps and topics inside the root map and build your publication.
