Creating the language objects using the publication

The Generate target languages option can be used to manually specify the target language objects to create for a publication version.

Before you begin

To perform this task, the following must be true:
  • You must have administrator-level credentials or translation management credentials.
  • The source language objects for which you want to generate target language objects must be in a Released status. Target language objects are not created for source language objects that are not released.

About this task

You can manually choose the language objects to create and base it on the publication's language requirements.

  • Make sure the publication is saved.

In Publication Manager, select the publication then click Publication > Save.

If Save is not available, it means the publication was already saved.

  • The procedure that follows may be combined with the next procedure for sending the language objects (out) for translation, but for clarity, they are described separately.
  • If the workflow is configured for translation and users have been assigned to the status for translation, this procedure can also be used to forward the language objects to the user's translation inbox.

Procedure

  1. In Organize Space, go to Content > Structured Content.
  2. Go to the folder containing the publication for which you want to create target language objects.
  3. In the list on the right, double-click the publication.
  4. In the object details view that appears, select the version of the publication.
  5. Select Generate target languages in the toolbar.
The Generate target languages dialog, showing a list of selectable languages under an overall checkbox labeled LANGUAGES. The list contains all languages that are specified for the publication in the Requested Languages metadata field. By default, all languages in the list are selected.
  6. At this point, you could clear the target language(s) for which you don'twant to generate target language objects.
    In this scenario:
    • If you selected the User Guide publication, German and Dutch are available and selected.
    • If you selected the Administration Guide publication, only Dutch is available and selected.
  7. Leave all languages selected.
  8. The Generate target languages dialog also shows a Resolutions to generate images field, set by default to the working resolution of this publication. This means that by default, when a target language image object is generated, it will have only this working resolution. To change the resolutions used, do one or both of the following:
    • Select an empty area in the field, and from the dropdown that opens, select an additional resolution you would also like to have in the target language image.
    • Select X next to a resolution you don't need in the target language image, to remove that resolution.
  9. To automatically have the language objects appear in a translator's inbox (this is a translator that can access their inbox in Organize Space), in the Generate Target Languages dialog, select that translator from the Translator dropdown.
  10. Select Generate.
The language versions are created for released objects in the baseline of this publication version, whose metadata field Enable translation management is checked.

In this scenario, if you selected the User Guide publication:

    • The Dutch and German language objects are created for the Map, and for the Introduction and How to use the product topics.

Since these topics are included in the publication and Dutch and German were selected in the Generate Target Languages dialog for the publication, these language objects are created.

    • Since the Notice topic did not have Enable translation management checked, no target language object is created for that topic.
    • The How to install and configure the product topic has a condition set that is excluded for this publication; however, the language object(s) are created.

If you selected the Administration Guide publication:

    • The Dutch language objects are created for the Map and the Introduction, How to use the product and How to install and configure the product topics.

Since these topics are included in the publication and Dutch was selected in the Generate Target Languages dialog for the publication, these language objects are created.

    • Since the topic Notice did not have Enable translation management checked, no target language object is created for that topic.

Results

If you selected a Translator, the language objects appear in the user's Translator inbox.

Example

The order in which you release the publications affects the language object creation. If you follow this procedure for both publications, only the language objects that are not available are created. For instance:
Release firstRelease next
User Guide

Dutch and German language objects are created for the objects.

Administration Guide

Dutch language objects for the map and topics already exist so no other language objects are created.

Administration Guide

Dutch language objects are created for the map and all topics.

User Guide

German language objects that are needed for the Map, the Introduction, and How to use the product are created.

These language objects do not currently exist.

If a target language object is not created, the report states:
No action required for GUID-<number> v
<n> because Translation Management is disabled, or there are no
released source objects or all target objects already exist.
