How file extensions and mime type are handled

Mime types and file extensions define what your browser does with the stream originating from Content Manager

There are two ways of submitting files to Content Manager:
Through the Web Services API
The file name is not submitted, only the content of the file is submitted. You must indicate the Electronic Document Type (EDT). This EDT is used to derive the extension and the mime type.
Through the Content Manager Author website.
Both the file name and the content are submitted to Content Manager along with an EDT. Please note: for templates the EDT is hidden on the submitted form and is standard EDTUNDEFINED. EDTUNDEFINED means that there is no default file extension nor mime type, so the default is to application/octet stream because templates can hold several or all file types.
