The missing object

Whenever you publish a publication that is missing an appropriate version, language or resolution for any topic, map, illustration or library topic, Content Manager replaces it by a placeholder object called the missing object.

If no satisfying version, language or resolution can be found for any of your content during publishing, you need to see it in the published result. That is why Content Manager is installed with placeholder objects that are used in this case, and provide a clear "missing object" message where your content should be inside the publication.

In the Repository, the missing objects are stored by default in System/Publishing/. Out-of-the-box, an English version of each possible missing object is provided. You need to translate them if you want the missing object message to be localized in your published content. If an object is missing and no matching language is found for the placeholder missing object during publishing, the English version will always be used.

You can choose not to use the placeholder missing objects we provide for a given output format, by checking out the Include missing objects configuration option located in all output format definitions. This is a recommended action for the Dynamic Delivery output format, which uses its own missing object placeholders.
