Typical translation scenario

When you create (a new version of) a publication, you can specify the set of languages to which the objects in that publication version are to be translated. You can also specify a fallback language to use if a specific object in your publication version is not available in a target language. When you create objects, you can enable or disable translation for those objects.

The <languagepath> element defines the source language - target language combination that is allowed in the system. For the example above, English is the source language.
Creating language objects for translation

Content Manager methods for managing translation and creating language objects for translation depend on the Status of the source language objects, and on the objects' Enable translation management metadata field.

Behavior
Assuming Enable translation management is selected for the object:
  • A target language object for translation is created for an object when a user selects to generate target languages for a publication version that contains that object in its baseline.
  • Alternatively, a target language object for translation is created for an object when a user selects to add a publication version that contains that object in its baseline to a translation job.

In both cases, the target language object will only be created if the source language object is in a Released-type workflow status.
