What is the difference between working and default for languages and resolutions?

A publication's working language and working resolution are distinct from your account's overall default language and resolution settings, so it is important to understand the differences.

Question: What is meant by "working" and "default" when it is used for languages and resolutions in draft or released publications?

The language and resolution within the object hierarchy

All repository objects follow a hierarchical structure that includes Logical level > Version level > Language/Resolution. The following table explains the logical, version and language levels:
HierarchyDescription
LogicalThe objects represented at the logical level are actually conceptual entities that are independent of specific versions or languages. The logical object has a unique identifier in the repository, normally a GUID.
VersionA specific instance of the logical object.
Language/Resolution
  • At the most granular level, within a version, each object exists in one or more languages.
  • Images also have resolution in addition to a language. The resolution level exists because different publications may require different resolutions. The specific resolutions that are present depend on your organization's specific implementation.

Account-specific language and resolution

After installing and starting Publication Manager, you create and configure your account, which includes defining the following account properties:
Account propertyDescription
Default languageDefines the overall default language for the account.
Default resolutionDefines a general resolution for the account and work within the client tools.

To make it easy to open and edit images in the appropriate image format, select resolution that is associated with the editable image formats that are to be edited.

Preview resolutionDefines the resolution to use when previewing images.

To ensure good user interface performance, set to a resolution that is associated with a light image format. For example: Low

Publication-specific language and resolution

When creating a publication, you set the following properties:
Publication propertyDescription
Working Language

Defines the language for authoring and managing content within the context of the specific publication.

Working Resolution

Defines the resolution for authoring and managing images within the context of the specific publication.

This resolution typically matches the primary image resolution you need to edit when working with the publication in Publication Manager.

The working resolution:
  • Should be a resolution that will always be available.
  • Will overrule the default resolution of the account.
  • Is used in publishing to determine if the image exists or not.
