Experience Space user interface overview

To help get you started, this topic explains the general layout and usage of the Experience Space user interface.

Main areas

The following screen capture illustrates the main areas of the user interface and some of the key features:

The numbered icons in the screen capture highlight the following key features of this view:

  1. The tabs at the top of the page give access to the following view in Experience Space:
    Content
The Content Manager view is the primary area in Experience Space where you access, create, edit, and publish content. This topic focuses on describing the features available on this page.
    Activities
Workflow Activities is where you can quickly access your activities and perform a variety of workflow tasks. If this tab does not appear, your organization may have chosen not to implement workflow.
    Publishing
The Publishing Queue provides an overview of your publish transactions. To view the Publishing Queue, you need publishing rights for at least one publication.

Note that you can switch between these different tabs without losing the current state of the individual pages, for example, we will remember which tree nodes are expanded. For more information on the Activities and Publishing views, refer to the related topics.

  2. Structure area — From this area on the left side of the page, you can do the following:
    • In the list of Publications, expand a publication's tree structure and navigate through its various folders, structure groups and so on. You can view only the publications to which you have access.
    • Type in the Filter publications field to quickly show only publications whose name matches the typed characters.
    • Select Items in progress to show a list of all items that are currently in progress and locked for editing. If you have the required rights, you can use this view to find and unlock items that are locked by other users. This might be handy, for example, if a user has left the company and has left some items in a locked state.
    • View the Favorites list for quick links to specific locations and items.
  3. Central items area — Examine or modify the content items and other item types that are contained in the organizational item you selected in the Structure area.

Experience Space provides several ways to customize the view to your specific and changing needs. For more information, refer to the "Refining the view" section of this topic.

  4. Action bar — Perform a variety of actions on one or more selected items.
    • Click the (Refresh) button to show the latest data.
    • The action icons that you can see depend on the type of item(s) that are selected and your rights and permissions in the system.
    • You can also perform these actions from the context menu (right-click).
  5. + Add new button — Create new items in Content Manager, such as new folders, structure groups, components, and so on.

The options available on the button's menu depend on the type of organizational item you are currently viewing and your rights and permissions. For example, when you are inside a folder and have the necessary rights, you will be able to create new components.

  6. Insights area — View additional details about an individual item that you have selected in the Central items area. Title bar — Access your user settings, the message center, the documentation, and go to the Classic user interface.

For more information, refer to the "Insights area" section of this topic.

  7. Title bar — Access your user settings, the message center, the documentation, and go to the Classic user interface.
  8. Breadcrumb trail — See the navigation path to the current item.

Insights area

The Insights areais multi-paneled area on the right side of the screen, which enables you to view details on a selected item while the list view is still visible. When the area is collapsed, click on any of the buttons to expand the panel and show additional detail for the selected item.

The panels that appear depend on the item type and system configuration, but may include the following:
IconPanelDescription
Information panelDisplays system and other read-only information about the item, including the Item URI, date created and last modified, publishing status and location in Content Manager
General panelDisplays content data and metadata for the item

The panel presents data as read-only, but if there is editable data, you can select the panel's heading to open the item in editing mode.

BluePrint panelDisplays the item's blueprint relationships, including which Publications include the selected item as either a shred or localized item.
Where used panelDisplays all of the item links with the In use by tab showing the items that use the selected item and the Makes use of tab showing the items that the selected item uses.

The Translated from tab shows the source Publication from which the selected item was translated.

The Translated in tab shows all target Publications where the selected item has been translated.

Both tabs indicate when a translation is out of date and needs to be updated.

Refining the view

The filters, together with the sort and column configuration options, enable you to refine the displayed data according to your current needs.

  • Apply an alternate layout — Instead of the default list view, select the grid view, which is particularly useful for multimedia content.
  • Use the filters to refine the displayed data, including use of multiple filters at one time.
  • Sort the list by any of the displayed columns.
  • Show, hide and resize columns.
  • With several of these options, like sorting and selecting columns, you can type ahead to quickly find the item you want:

Remembered settings

Experience Space remembers some changes you make to the user interface across browser sessions, provided that you use the same browser. The following settings are remembered across sessions:
  • Width of the Structure area and Central items area
  • Collapsed or expanded state of the Structure area and Insights area
  • Width of the region tree panel in the page editor view
  • Width of the tree panel in the item selector
  • The last selected location per publication per item type (component, multimedia component, keyword)
