Software Installed on a Virtual Machine
Recovering a MultiTrans virtual machine.
If the MultiTrans software is installed on a virtual machine, the most efficient way to return to production following a disaster is to mount a copy of the backed-up VM image on another server. After mounting the image, make sure the server DNS as well as the Web site URLs are redirected if necessary.
This is the most highly recommended recovery method. It requires that regular backup copies of the full image are taken. Your disaster recovery plan should include the location of the backup copies of the image as well as the server upon which the backup will be mounted.
Following this method, the recovery time objectives (RTO) will only include the time necessary to mount the image on new hardware, and the recovery point objectives (RPO) will be the last backup of the VM.
Some virtualization technologies enable automated frequent updates of the VM in another location, which can facilitate this process. To shorten the RPO, on top of having frequent replication of the production VM, you can also set up frequent or live replication of the folders detailed in the Data Backups section. Once the VM is recovered, then the latest data can be copied onto this VM.
