How to create a server-based translation memory

This topic describes how to create a server-based translation memory in the Translation Memories view.

Before you begin

If you have not already set up a connection to the server where you want to create the new translation memory, you will need the following information:

  • The name of the server computer.
  • The location (organization, resource library) where you want the translation memory to belong.
  • The container where the translation memory will physically exist.
  • Your user name and password for the server.

To create a server-based translation memory:

Procedure

  1. In the Translation Memories view, launch the New Server-based Translation Memory Wizard:
  2. Complete the General page:
    • If you want to base the new translation memory on an existing server-based translation memory, select one here.

    • Select the server where you want to create the new translation memory.
    • Select the location for where the translation memory will belong and the container where you want it to be created.
  3. Click Next. The Language Pairs page is displayed. Click Add to select a source and target language as a pair. You can add an unlimited amount of language pairs.
  4. Click Next. The Fields and Settings page is displayed. If you chose to base the new translation memory on an existing translation memory, any custom fields that exist in the copy-from translation memory will be listed here. On this page:
    • If you want to use an existing field template, click Template and select a template from the Select Field Template dialog box. The fields defined in the template are used in the new translation memory.
    • If you want to create custom fields for your translation units, type the name of the field in the Name column and then complete the other columns for that row.
    • If you want to edit custom fields applied from a template, first click Edit and then make the changes.
    • If you want to disable any of the recognition settings on this page, clear the selections next to each recognition check box.
  5. Click Next. The Language Resources page is displayed. If you chose to base the new translation memory on an existing translation memory, the language resources that exist in the copy-from translation memory will be listed here. You can define language resources for each source language. On this page:
    • If you want to use the default language resource template, click Finish.
    • If you want to edit the default language resource lists, select the source language for which you want to define resources from the Language box. Then select the list in the Resources box and click Edit. Edit existing entries in the list or add new entries as required.
    • If you want to use an existing language resource template, click Template and select a template.
    • If you want to edit the language resource lists from a language resource template, click Edit next to the Template box at the top of the page. Then select the list in the Resources box and click Edit. Edit existing entries in the list or add new entries as required.
  6. When you have finished, click Finish to create the new translation memory. The Creating page is displayed.
  7. When the translation memory has been created successfully, click Close to save the translation memory and close the wizard.
    • If you want to set up user access rights to the translation memory, you have to do that in the TM Server application.
The translation memory is added to the navigation pane under Translation Memories > [Server Name] > [Language Pair] . You can edit translation memory settings in the Translation Memory Settings dialog box.
