Configuring translatable fields in Schemas

You can control what fields are sent to translation by configuring Schemas and Metadata Schemas.

Before you begin

Rights
You must have the following rights and permissions in the Content Manager to create or edit a Schema:
  • Schema Management rights
  • Write permissions for the Folder in which the Schema is located
Translation management system support for ITS
Translatable fields require ITS (Internationalization Tag Set) support. Perform these steps if you are using SDL WorldServer 10.1 or SDL TMS 2011 SP1 onwards.

About this task

You can configure what fields are sent to translation by configuring Schemas. Simple Schemas define the field types and metadata of Component content, and Metadata Schemas define metadata in Content Manager items. Folders, Structure Groups and Pages are Content Manager items that you can send for translation which may use these Metadata .

You can send the following fields in a Schema or Metadata field for translation:

  • Text fields (but not if the values are selected from a list)
  • External links (for example, if you want to translate a URL such as google.co.uk to google.nl)

Procedure

  1. Open Content Manager Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the Publication and Folder in which your Schemas are located.
  3. Select a Schema and choose Open in the context menu.
  4. In the General tab:
    • Select Translate Name if you want the name of the Component to be translated (the option is available for Simple Schemas only).
    • Select Aggregate Translation Items if you want to add Content Manager items included in a Translation Job into a single item on the translation management system instead of in separate files for each item.
  5. In the Design tab or Metadata Design tab, select the Translatable check box for each text field or external link field that you want to be translated (when an item that uses this Schema is sent to translation):
  6. Click Save and Close.

What to do next

You need to add a Content Type in SDL TMS called ITS to instruct the configuration to use the ITS filter for each translatable Content Manager item type. For more information, see Filtering translation content using ITS Filter.
