Behavior of the Generative Translation task

The Generative Translation task is an Automated task which uses an LLM to translate content. AWS Bedrock is the embedded LLM provided by default by RWS.

The Generative Translation task is included in all standard workflow templates if you purchase the AI Essentials package.

The Generative Translation task can also be used as part of custom workflow templates.

What is the Generative Translation task?

The behavior of the Generative Translation task in default workflows is described below:
  • The Generative Translation task is placed after the Machine Translation task.
  • The Generative Translation task is skipped automatically if all the segments are translated during the Translation Memory Matching task and all the segments have a match score above 97% or the Machine Translation task.
  • The Generative Translation task translates the content by dynamically constructing a prompt according to the translation context. All segments translated with the Generative Translation task are displayed in Trados Online Editor with origin set to Neural Machine Translation and system set to Generative Translation.

Does the Generative Translation task support prompts?

The Generative Translation task uses a built-in set of prompts to make sure that you get the most appropriate output. However, you can also customize these prompts by adding the gt_instructions custom field to your project and specifying instructions for the translation model.
  1. Create a custom field called gt_instructions, and then select either Text or Long Text as the field type. The text of the custom field should not be more than 1000 characters long and should contain the following allowed characters: A-Z letters in upper case or lower case, 0-9 digits, space, exclamation sign, comma, or dash. If the text of the custom field exceeds the 1000-character limit or contains forbidden or special characters, the task will not take the instructions into consideration.
  2. Add the gt_instructions custom field to your project. You can add custom fields to both new and existing projects.
  3. Add instructions as the text of the custom field.
Suppose you want your translation to be gender-neutral. In this case, add a prompt such as adapt the translation to be gender-neutral or make it gender-neutral.gt_instructions custom field

How does the Generative Translation task interact with other forms of automated translation in Trados Enterprise?

Familiarize yourself with the following interactions between the Generative Translation task and other forms of automated translation in Trados Enterprise:
  • If a segment has a TM match higher than 97%, the Generative Translation task will not translate or modify that segment.
  • If a segment has already been translated by using MT or NMT and no terms are available for that segment in the termbase, the Generative Translation task will not translate or modify that segment.
  • If there is a gt_instructions custom field which provides custom instructions, the Generative Translation task will translate and modify all relevant segments.
  • If a segment has already been translated by using MT or NMT and there are terms available for that segment in the termbase, the Generative Translation task will adapt the translation of that segment to make sure that the proper terms are being used.
  • If a segment or various content is locked, the Generative Translation task will not translate or modify that segment.
  • If a segment is empty, the Generative Translation task will translate it from scratch.
  • If the Generative Translation task does not apply any translations (e.g. all the segments are already translated), the Generative Translation task appears as having been skipped, in the Task History tab of your project. While in the Task History tab, select the Generative Translation task and, in the right-hand side panel, consult the comment: No segments were found eligible for generative translation.
