Moving Component Presentations into Regions

If your organization has upgraded Content Manager from a version that did not use Regions and now has decided to use Regions, you may need to modify existing Pages to move its Component Presentations from the Page level into the correct Regions. Consult your implementer for guidance on Region design.

About this task

Before moving Components into Regions, first talk to your implementer for guidance on which Components should go in which Regions. Each Region may impose its own restrictions on which, and how many, Components it can contain.

In most cases, when migrating from a Page design that is not Region-based to one that is Region-based, the publishing model that is in use will be the older template-based framework. In this case, you will move an entire Component Presentation when you move a Component. There is no extra step involved, and the Component Template that is associated with the Component automatically goes along with the Component when you move it.

In a templateless, data-only publishing model, no Component Template is required and there is no concept of a Component Presentation. Since no Component Template is used, you move only Components with no selected Component Templates. Again, check with your implementer if you have questions.

Procedure

  1. If you have not yet opened the Page, in Content Manager Explorer, navigate to the Publication and Structure Group that contains the Page.
  2. Open the Page you want to modify.
The dialog for the Page opens.
  3. Select the Design tab.
The left half of the content area shows the tree structure of the Page with its Components and the hierarchy of its Regions, if it has any. The ribbon toolbar switches to the Content tab.
  4. In the structure, select a top-level Component that you want to move to a Region.
  5. In the ribbon toolbar, select Cut to move the Component to your clipboard.
  6. Select the Region in which you want to place the Component.
The right half of the content area indicates the total number of Components you can add to the Page or Region you selected, as well as which Schemas and Component Templates (if used) are allowed. It is possible that the level you selected does not allow you to add any (more) Components.
  7. In the ribbon toolbar, select Paste to insert the Component from your clipboard.
When using template-based publishing, the entire Component Presentation is inserted.
  8. You can adjust the position of the Component within the Region as needed by selecting Move up and Move down in the ribbon toolbar.
  9. Repeat steps 4 through 8 above until the top level contains no Components, or as many as are allowed on that level.
  10. When you are finished moving all the Components you wanted to move to the Regions of this Page, select Save and Close.
