Working with publications in Tridion Docs

A publication is a compilation of independent, version-controlled objects from the Content Manager repository, which is combined with additional information that determines how the content should be assembled and published.

Assembling and managing

In Publication Manager, you can manage and control publications, including baselines, personalization elements, publishing outputs and publication life cycles.

  • A publication exists in the repository as a Publication object and is the one object that contains all the other objects making up a given deliverable. Each publication must have at least one map, a root map, which is located at the top of the publication's content hierarchy. This root map contains all the other maps and topics.
  • The publication's context includes the information about variables and conditions.
  • The publication's baseline determines which versions of individual objects to use.
  • Each publication typically defines one or more outputs, that is, the formats to which you can publish the publication, such as Dynamic Delivery, PDF, a Help format, and so on.

Publishing

Publishing is the process of pushing content, contained in a publication object, to a delivery platform. After the publishing process is initiated, Tridion Docs automates the rest.

In Tridion Docs, users can initiate the publishing process from either Publication Manager or Organize Space.

Managing work

The Publication Hub in Organize Space is a central place for teams to access a publication that is in development and for individual members to access specific assignments for work on that publication.

Translating

To translate a publication, a user with the required system privileges can use Organize Space to export topics for translation and then import the translated topics that are returned from the translation agency.

Personalizing

One of the powerful capabilities of Content Manager is the ability to personalize content so it only appears in a specific context, which it does through use of conditions and variables. Publication Manager lets you control which conditions are published and how variables are resolved.
