Migration to the new publishing framework

SDL Web 8 deprecated the old publishing framework (configuring publishing targets in Content Manager) in favor of the new publishing framework (configuring publishing targets in Topology Manager). You can choose to continue using the deprecated feature, but because it may be dropped in the next release, you may want to migrate already to the new functionality.

Because SDL Tridion Sites 9.1 continues to support the existing publishing framework as a deprecated feature, some parts of the product require attention when you decide to migrate to the new publishing framework. Your existing setup is affected by the migration in the following ways:
Target Types set through Business Process Type

The Business Process Types you create, and which you refer to from your Publications, determines which Target Types exist and how they are configured.

Publication Targets not used

Because the new publishing framework does not use Publication Targets anymore, the settings you configure in them have no effect.

Obsolete settings in Publication dialog
The following settings on the General tab of your Publication dialogs are no longer needed:
  • Publication URL
  • Publication Path
  • Images URL
  • Images Path
User Generated Content: DataSources.xml ignored in favor of User Generated Content tab in Publication

As soon as you set a Business Process Type in a Publication, that Publication no longer checks the file DataSources.xml for its User Generated Content settings, but rather checks the settings configured in its own User Generated Content tab.
