Website building blocks
The main building blocks used to create websites are Components, Component Schemas, Component Templates, Regions, Region Schemas, Pages, Page Templates and Page Schemas.
The following diagram shows the relationship between the main website building blocks.
The Content Manager enables you to create content and layout items separately and then to combine these items to create publishable Pages. As a result, teams in your organization can accomplish what they do best. For example, authors can create content, designers can design the look-and-feel of Pages, and editors can determine what content is published where. Depending upon your role in your organization, you may participate in creating or using any of these building blocks.
- Component Schemas
-
A Component Schema, often simply called Schema, defines the structure of Component content and determines the type of content that authors can create. For example, a Schema called "Press Release" could define the following fields:
- Headline
- Date
- Summary
- Body
- Components
-
A Component is a collection of text and/or multimedia content based on its Component Schema. Components based on the same Component Schema share the structure defined by that Schema. In Content Manager Explorer, Components are typically displayed as forms that content authors can fill in.
- Component Templates
-
A Component Template uses scripting and HTML formatting to turn a Component into a Component Presentation. A Component Template determines how the resulting Component Presentation will look and behave on the published website.
- Component Presentations
- A Component Presentation is a publishable piece of content that is the result of combining a Component (content) with a Component Template (design). Component Presentations are defined on a Page or in a Region. The red boxes areas on the right are Component Presentations.
- Regions
- A Region is an area of a Page, which can contain Component Presentations, other Regions, or both, as defined by its Region Schema. A Page is itself also a (top-level) Region. The red dashed boxed areas on the right are Regions.
- Region Schemas
- A Region Schema defines which, and how many, Component Presentations and/or other Regions can occur in this Region.
- Pages
- A Page is a top-level Region which contains one or more Regions and/or Component Presentations, and is made publishable by applying its Page Template.
- Page Templates
- Page Templates determine which Regions and/or Component Presentations a Page can display, and determines the overall display and behavior of the Page. Also, a Page Template often determines the branding (the look-and-feel) of the Page.
Depending upon your role in your organization, you may participate in creating or using any of these building blocks.
