Example: Opening single files for translation

This topic provides a detailed example of how to open a single file for translation using the Translate Single Document command in Starter.

About this task

Assume you have a file called MyDocument.doc which you want to translate from English to German. You also have a translation memory (TM) called MyTM.sdltm and a termbase called MyTermbase.sdltb.

Procedure

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Drag and drop the file to the Welcome view pane in the drag-and-drop area.
    • Go to File > Open > Translate Single Document.
  2. In the Open Document dialog, select MyDocument.doc, and then select Open.
  3. In the Translation Memory and Document Settings dialog, select English (United States) as the Source Language and German (Germany) as the Target Language from the drop-down lists.
  4. Add your TM for translation, by selecting Use > File-based Translation Memory from the drop-down list.
  5. In the Open File-based Translation Memory dialog, select MyTM.sdltm, and then select Open.
The TM is added to the list.
  6. Add your termbase:
    1. Select Advanced.
    2. On the Project Template Settings page, in the navigation tree, go to Language Pairs > All Language Pairs >Termbases.
    3. Select Use > File-based MultiTerm Termabse from the drop-down list. In the Open Termbase dialog, select My Termbase.sdltb, and then select Open.
  7. Select OK to close the Project Template Settings dialog, and then select OK to close the Translation Memory and Document Settings dialog also.
A project is automatically created for you. Use the Project Settings dialog to change the TM and termbase selections and to specify other settings.
