Editing a Multimedia Component

You can edit a Multimedia Component to modify its name, multimedia type, or associated metadata. For images, you can also perform basic image editing, including cropping and resizing.

Before you begin

The following restrictions apply to editing a Multimedia Component:
  • You must have Component Management rights and Write permissions for the Folder.
  • If included in a Publication BluePrint, you must either edit the parent item or create a localized copy.

Procedure

  1. Access the Content Manager Explorer website.
  2. Navigate to the Publication and Folder that contains the Multimedia Component you want to edit.
  3. Select the Multimedia Component and click Open on the Home tab of the ribbon. Content Manager Explorer displays the properties of the Multimedia Component.
  4. On the General tab, you can edit the Name, as needed.
The name must be unique within the Folder. In a BluePrint, this naming constraint extends to any Parent or Child Publications in the BluePrint.
  5. In the Component Content section, the things you can change depend on the option that is selected for the Resource Type. It is also possible to change the Resource Type, such as to change a referenced image to an uploaded one.
The following table describes what you can do for the two types of resources.
    OptionDescription
UploadedIf this option is selected, you can do the following to modify the file:
    • Upload — Upload a new file to replace the existing one. (Avoid uploading files that contain non-ASCII characters or the following characters: %, & or + in their file names. These characters may prevent the ability to preview and publishing of the Multimedia Component.)
    • Download — Download the existing file, such as to modify it in a separate application before uploading a new version.
    • Edit (Images only) — Perform some basic editing on the image. Functions you can perform include cropping, resizing, and rotating. (Note that edits made to an image are complete only when you save the Multimedia Component.)
External (old method)If this option is selected, the content is included by reference to an external resource. This option is an older method of referencing an external resource. The preferred method is to access and use external content from predefined external content libraries (or mount points) that have been set up by your organization. For more information on how to do this, refer to the related topic on external content.
    • Multimedia Type — Change the multimedia file type being referenced.
    • URL — Edit the web address of the external resource.
  6. If the Metadata tab is available, you can modify these also if needed.
  7. Click Save and Close.
  8. Depending on the item's schema, Content Manager Explorer may prompt you to add the item to a Bundle so that it can enter a workflow. You can choose to skip this step, but until you add it to a Bundle, your changes will not be checked in.

Results

The Content Manager saves a modified version of the Multimedia Component. If the Content Manager checks in the Multimedia Component, any Pages or Components that use the Multimedia Component will now use the new version.
