Multimedia Components
A Multimedia Component is a special type of Component you can use to store multimedia files as reusable content in the system's database. Multimedia Components can be used for images, videos, and many other common file formats, such as PDF documents.

Content Manager provides a number of default Multimedia Types from which you can create Multimedia Components. - Creating a Multimedia Component in Content Manager Explorer
You can create a Multimedia Component by uploading a local or network file to the Content Manager. - Editing a Multimedia Component in Content Manager Explorer
You can edit a Multimedia Component to modify its name, multimedia type, or associated metadata. For images, you can also perform basic image editing, including cropping and resizing. - Viewing the contents of a Multimedia Component

While editing a webpage in Experience Manager, you can insert and edit images in an area with formatted text (also called a format area." You can also insert a standalone image (or other standalone file), which is stored in the Content Manager database as a Multimedia Component. standalone image or other standalone file that is stored in the Content Manager database is contained within a Multimedia Component. - Editing images (Classic UI)
While working with images that are contained within Multimedia Components, you can quickly perform basic image editing tasks without needing to use a separate image editing application. Image editing is supported for the JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg) and PNG file formats. - External multimedia content
If the External Content Library (ECL) feature has been set up by your organization for one or more multimedia content repositories, you may be able to access that content and use this content on your webpages. The way you work with external multimedia content is very similar to standard multimedia component, but there are important differences as well.
