Adding a standalone image or file to a webpage

Add an existing file (stored in a Multimedia Component), or a file that you upload on the spot.

About this task

This task explains how to add images, multimedia, or other files to a webpage as a standalone Multimedia Component.

Procedure

  1. On an editable webpage, start editing by clicking the pencil button in the top right corner.
  2. Select the border of the Multimedia Component you want to edit, and do one of the following:
    • Click the Show Properties icon that appears in the top right corner of the border.
    • Click the Properties button on the Home ribbon toolbar.
The properties of the Component appear in a popup.
  3. You can add a file to a webpage in one of the following ways:
    • If you see the text <add internal link to multimedia content> anywhere on the webpage, you can click that text to insert a file at that position.
    • You can choose to add a new or existing file as a completely independent item, which you can add to the webpage and then move to a preferred position. To do this, select Insert Content on the Home ribbon toolbar.
If you click the text <add internal link to multimedia content> or the Insert Content button on the ribbon toolbar, the library panel slides in from the left.
  4. If you want to upload a new file, you can do so in several ways:
    • If you use a Chrome or Firefox browser in Windows, you can drag a file from Windows Explorer or from your desktop directly onto the Library. The file is uploaded and a Multimedia Component is created that contains the file in the Folder location in which you dropped the file.
    • Alternatively, click the area at the bottom to open a system file selection dialog, navigate to the location of your file, and select it.
The name of your file must not contain the characters %, & or +, nor any non-ASCII characters.
  5. Alternatively, navigate through the Folder structure until you see a thumbnail of the item you want to use. If you know (part of) the name of the item you want to insert, you can also click the Search button at top left and enter it, using the * and ? wildcard characters where necessary, into the search box that appears.
  6. To see more detailed information about this item, such as its title, creation date, or who created it, click on the "i" icon.
  7. Click Apply to add this file to the webpage.
The file appears as a link, or embedded on the webpage.
