Creating a Locale

About this task

To create a locale:

Procedure

  1. In WorldServer, go to Management > Business Rule Linkage > Locales.
  2. On the Locales page, click Add.
  3. On the New Locale page, enter information about the locale:
    • From the Language list, choose the language (for example, English) or language spoken in a place (for example English (United States)). Notice that the Name field is updated to reflect your choice. Create at least one locale to reflect the original language of your content. (If you are configuring WorldServer to be used for translation, this is called the source language.)
    • Leave the default value for the Name field or enter another human-readable name that makes sense to your users. This field is used to help users distinguish among locale choices. For this reason, we suggest that you adopt a consistent naming scheme. For example, you might decide to rename English (United States) to US English, or even to the ISO code, en_US.
    • From the Encoding list, choose the encoding that represents how the content or its translations are stored. The value depends on the underlying storage mechanism. The encoding you pick becomes the default encoding for that locale, but it can be overridden for individual folders.
    • In the Members area, from the Available Users list, select any users who should have access to this locale and click the Add button (>>). The users appear in the Users in locale list. Select all users who will work with the locale, including system administrators, project managers, translators, and authors. You can associate locales and users now or later, either when you create (or edit) locales, or when you create (or edit) users. A user who is not a member of a locale can edit content in that locale, but may not receive certain announcements or be involved in tasks related to workflow.
    • Click Save.
  4. If you are configuring WorldServer to be used for translation, create additional locales to reflect the target languages – the languages that your content will be translated into.
