Introduction

This document is intended for customers who use Contenta Web (CW) and either extend or customize the application.

Contenta Web was introduced to provide a web interface to Contenta functionality that had previously only been available through the LAN-based Contenta Explorer client. As with the Contenta Explorer, customers have the ability to add tools or modify tools delivered as part of the Contenta Web installation. Contenta Web also extends the ability to customize the user interface presentation.

The Contenta Explorer client is delivered as an executable and can only be modified by RWS Engineering. RWS controls the presentation and display of the interface. Contenta Web utilizes many technologies including Java, JSP, Javascript, XSLT, HTML and CSS, which allow sites to personalize the interface to fit either corporate branding standards or support business processes unique to their organization. Unlike Contenta Explorer, this means that customers can now modify, extend or reduce the functionality of the core Contenta Web client and by doing so, introduce an element of risk. It is therefore essential that care be taken when making any change to standard code.

RWS is committed to supporting customers' efforts by providing documentation and training that give customers the basics that they need to extend and customize Contenta Web. RWS is committed to documenting changes in the Contenta Web environment from release to release that we believe impact custom code that any user may develop. This includes changes that are made that do not support compatibility with previous versions. Although it is always a goal in RWS design and development decision-making, there are times when we cannot support compatibility with previous versions. RWS offers deprecated platforms, API methods, etc. as early as possible in a release cycle.

RWS does not document changes that we believe will not impact customizations as there would be little benefit to customers.
