Importing XLIFF Files into a TextBase
About this task
XLIFF stands for XML Localisation Interchange File Format. It is a standard format to share and work on files among the localization industry. You can import these files into a TextBase and you can also translate and generate XLIFF files with the MultiTrans XLIFF Editor or Web Editor.
The TextBase Import from XLIFF does not preserve metadata or formatting. To transfer metadata and formatting from an XLIFF file to a TextBase, save the XLIFF file as TMX from the MultiTrans XLIFF Editor), then use the TextBase Import from TMX.
Procedure
- Select Build TextBase, either from the Process menu or the Start screen.
The Step 1 - Output Method Selection window opens.
- Select the XLIFF files radio button.
- Select the Create new TextBase radio button if you are building a new TextBase. If it is to be a local TextBase, simply type the name in the field, if it is to be a server TextBase, click the browse icon in the field and select the appropriate server (and folder if necessary).
- Select the Append to existing TextBase radio button if you are adding documents to a pre-existing TextBase. In this case, select the appropriate TextBase.
- You may also choose to Confirm all alignments as an XLIFF file should normally be perfectly aligned.
- Click Next.
- In Step 2 – Select Files, you must identify the files that need to be imported into a TextBase. Click Add files to the list to browse your computer and locate the files and then click Open.
- At this point you can remove individual files from the list by selecting them (click once) and then choosing Delete selected files. Alternatively, you can remove all files from the list at once by choosing Clear list of files.
- Once the files are displayed in the Selected Files window, click Next.
- In the Step 2 – Languages Selection window, you will need to determine the languages of the texts you are importing. Select the appropriate language from the drop-down lists next to the Source and Target Language fields.
- Once you have selected all languages, click the Next button and Step 3 – Extracting File Parts is automatically launched. At this stage, the selected files are read by the program and accepted or discarded for import.
- Once Step 3 completes, the Start Import window is displayed showing which files have been accepted and which discarded. To continue, click Import.
- Click Build, and you receive confirmation that your TextBase Build has been scheduled.
- The Scheduled Operations window opens and you can track the status of your TextBase. Click Refresh to see the progress.
- To check the details on your build, select View Details. A window opens listing any documents that were not appended and the reason why they were rejected.
What to do next
Once you have built your TextBase, you may then open it with TextBase Search to search for expressions, translate a document, or to extract translations and build a TermBase.
