Configuring XLIFF file types
Configure XLIFF file type settings, so that you customize the way documents compliant with the OASIS XML Localisation Interchange File Format (XLIFF) standard version 1.1 or 1.2. are processed during translation or review.
Procedure
- Decide for which projects you want to configure file type settings:
- For the active project, go to the Projects view, and on the Home tab, select Project Settings.
- For all future projects, go to .
- Expand the File Types list, and select XLIFF.
- Select the Settings page and set up the behavior of the XLIFF file type:
- Select Display segments from groups and trans-units with attribute translate='no' as locked content to displaytrans-unit segments with the attribute "translate" set to "no" as locked content. If this setting is disabled, these segments are ignored.
- Select Do not store segmentation information in the translated file if you will use the
*.xlifffile translated in Trados Studio in an application that does not support*.xlifffiles with segmentation structures. The*.xliffstandard specifies an element structure which shows information about the segmentation of the translatable content. This structure is automatically added when SDL Trados Studio generates the*.xliffdocument. - Select Include leading/trailing tags in segments to include tags into the segment content.
- Choose options for the Tag text for XLIFF files:
- Default - for the following elements, the display text is extracted from actual value of the inline elements:
For the following elements, the display text is extracted from thebpt ept itctypeattribute, or if that does not exist, theequiv-textattribute.
If the attributes do not exist, the display text is set to the element name.gx bx ex - 'equiv-text' attribute - the display text of the tag is extracted from the content of the
equiv-textattribute of the inline element. If theequiv-textattribute does not exist, the display text is set to the element name. - Tag content applies only to paired inline elements, such a
ph. The display text of the inline tag is extracted from the value of the tag pair. If the text value does not exist, or the tag is not paired, the display text is set to the element name. - select Display text length and choose the length to which the display text for the inline tags is truncated to.
- Default - for the following elements, the display text is extracted from actual value of the inline elements:
- Select Generate the document structure for "group" elements so that Trados Studio generates the document structure for group elements.
- Select Generate the document structure for "trans-unit" elements so that Trados Studio generates the document structure for trans-unit elements.
- For the The document structure will be generated from the following attributes option, select what attributes will be used.
- Select Overwrite target-language attribute value when generating translated file so that when Trados Studio generates the translated file, it writes the language selected by the user into the target-language attribute value.
- Select the Segment status mapping page and specify the available settings:
- Under File opening:, create correspondences between the XLIFF status: and the Studio status: columns, by choosing values from the lists, for each column.
- Under File saving:, create correspondences between the Studio status: and the XLIFF status: columns, by choosing values from the lists, for each column.
- Under Segment locking, select the checkboxes corresponding to the segment status which triggers a lock operation.
- Under State-qualifiers select:
- Map state-qualifier attribute values when reading file to create correspondence between segment states in Studio Editor.
- Map state-qualifier attribute values when writing file to create correspondence between segment states in target file.
- Select the Whitespace page, to specify how SDL Trados Studio deals with whitespace characters (spaces, non-breaking spaces, tabs, line breaks) in the elements of an XML file. Under Whitespace in content, choose one of the options:
- Select Always preserve, so that SDL Trados Studio does not replace any whitespace found in the XML element with a single space.
- Select Normalize unless xml:space='preserve', so that SDL Trados Studio replaces only the whitespace which is not tagged with the attribute
xml:space='preserve'. - Select Always normalize, so that SDL Trados Studio replaces any whitespace found in the XML element with a single space, ignoring any
xml:space='preserve'attribute.
- Select the Schema Validation page and specify validation options for
*.xlifffiles. - Select the QuickInsert page.
- Specify QuickInsert settings to insert tags and formatting, or to insert text and special characters.
- Select the Embedded content page.
- Select Enable embedded content processing.
- In the Document structure information area, select Add to create extraction rules based on document structure information.
- In the Tag definition rules area, select Add to specify the tags which will be processed and to define them as translatable or non-translatable.
- Select OK.
