Implementing tracking using default Template Building Blocks

You need to enable the tracking of content on the presentation server by adding the Page Tracking and Component Tracking Template Building Blocks provided with Online Marketing Explorer to your Page Templates and Component Templates.

Before you begin

To use the default Template Building Blocks, you first need to load them into Template Builder—Loading Online Marketing Explorer Template Building Blocks

About this task

Online Marketing Explorer provides Template Building Blocks to enable tracking of content on the presentation side:

Tracking Static Web sites
To track embedded (static) Component Presentations on a Page, add the Page Tracking Template Building Block to your Compound Page Templates—the template adds RegisterComponentVisit TCDL tags to each embedded Component Presentation on your Page.
If you add the Page Tracking Template Building Block to your Compound Page Templates, the tracking mechanism tracks Components marked with this tag instead of Page metadata. In this case, note that only static Component Presentations are tracked.
If at least one RegisterComponentVisit TCDL is present in the Page (for example, if you added the Page Tracking template Building Block to your Compound Page Templates or Component Tracking template in you Compound Component Template), the tracking mechanism tracks Components marked with this tag instead of Page metadata. In this case, note that only Components marked with RegisterComponentVisit TCDL are tracked.
For information on configuring Page metadata, see Configuring cd_dynamic_config.xml.
Tracking Dynamic Web sites
To track Component Presentations, add the Component Tracking Template Building Block to your Compound Component Templates— the template adds RegisterComponentVisit TCDL to each Component.
To track dynamic Component Presentations or other Components inserted using script—the <ComponentPresentation> tag—you need to add the Component Tracking Template Building Blocks to you Compound Component Template.

Procedure

  1. If you added Component Presentations statically to your Pages:
    1. In Template Builder, open your Compound Page Template.
    2. Add the Page Tracking Template Building Block after the Template Building Block that generates the Output item in the package, for example after your Dreamweaver Template Building Block.
  2. If you are using Dynamic Component Presentations, to enable tracking in these Components:
    1. In Template Builder, open your Compound Component Template.
    2. Add the Component Tracking Template Building Block after the Template Building Block that generates the Output item in the package, for example after your Dreamweaver Template Building Block.
