Configuring the FrameMaker 8-2022 MIF file type
Configure FrameMaker 8-2022 MIF file type settings to customize processing for this file type during translation or review.
Procedure
- To configure file type settings, go to:
- Projects view > Home > Project Settings, for the active project.
- File > Options, for all future projects.
- Expand File Types and select Adobe FrameMaker 8-2022 MIF.
- On the Styles page customize which character styles should Trados Studio exclude from translation. To add non translatable styles, click Add and type a regular expression.
- Styles to be converted into inline tags - marks Word elements that should be treated as tags.
- Styles to be converted into structure tags - converts specified styles applied to text into structure tags.
- On the Common page, customize what content becomes translatable:
- Process unsupported file versions - processes Adobe FrameMaker files even if the file version of Adobe FrameMaker is higher than the version supported by Trados Studio.
- Process reference formats - extracts cross-reference formatting for translation.
- Process content of external cross-references - extracts referenced content for translation in a new paragraph unit.
- Skip advanced font formatting (tracking, kerning) - ignores spacing and kerning from translation.
- Process autonumber definitions - extracts numbers that are produced by autonumbering. Autonumbering is often used to number pages, chapters, and so on.
- Process element definitions - extracts element definitions for translation. Element definitions are used in structured FrameMaker. They are stored in an Elements Definitions Document (EDD).
- Process Text Inset content - extracts content imported by reference in the Adobe FrameMaker file.
- Process hidden conditional text - extracts conditional text that is not exposed in the source document. When this option is disabled, any the conditional text is in the file is extracted as an inline tags.
- Display special characters as text - extracts special characters as text. When this option is disabled, special characters are extracted as a Char tag instead. EmDash and EnDash are always extracted as text.
MIF V1 files will always display dashes as dashes. MIF V2 will display dashes as tags when Display special characters as text is disabled.Note:
- Process special formatting - processes special formatting that cannot be shown in the Editor, such as rotation, scaling, pair kerning or spacing. Special formatting is represented as tags in the target document. If this option is disabled, special formatting is not extracted.
- Process master pages - extracts FrameMaker Master pages.
- Convert forced line breaks to inline tag - converts hard returns to tags that appear inside the segments. If this option is disabled, forced line breaks are instead converted to structure tags, which are considered segment breaks.
- Process file info - file info in Adobe products is the equivalent of document properties in Microsoft Office products. You can only extract text fields for translation. You cannot extract fields such as date. Information that is not extracted is preserved in the target document.
- Remove discretionary hyphens - the placement of discretionary hyphens depends on the structure and word pronunciation in the source language, so usually you should choose to remove rather than extract them.
- Create segment for each index entry level - creates a segment for each index entry level. If disabled, index entry characters are extracted as inline tags.
- Exclude index markers from segment boundaries -excludes all leading or trailing indexes from segments. For example, if you have a segments with the following leading index: <index/> text ... text , it is changed into the segment: text ... text. Consider enabling this if you use SDLX translation memories.
- Process variables - extracts the variables available in the FrameMaker file. Variable values that are used in the file are extracted for translation regardless of this setting. In the drop-down menu, specify how you want to extract FrameMaker text variables:
- Used variables - all variables that are defined and used in the file.
- All variables -all variables that are defined, regardless of if they are used in the file.
- Process reference pages - extracts reference page content. Choose which pages to extract content from:
- Customized pages - extracts and displays only the content of the customized pages (non default reference pages).
- All Pages - extracts and displays the content of all reference pages.
- Default and customized pages -extracts and displays all the reference pages except the reference page of type HTML, Heading and Master Page Maps.
- On the QuickInsert page, customize the QuickInsert settings for the QuickInsert group for this type of file.
- On the Font mapping page, customize the QuickInsert settings for your source and target languages.
- Click OK to close the window.
