Interactions between Online Editor and Browser Workbench

Starting with WorldServer 11.7.1, the requirement of working only in Online Editor or only in Browser Workbench as part of a specific human step has been removed, which means that you can now alternate between them freely as part of the same human step.

Online Editor and Browser Workbench rely on different models to store and process data. In earlier versions of WorldServer, the Enable Online Editing automatic action was required to convert Browser Workbench segments into their Online Editor counterparts—online assets or BCM (bilingual content model) documents—, whereas the Save Online Asset automatic action would convert data specific to Online Editor into a format suitable for Browser Workbench.

Starting with WorldServer 11.7.1, these automatic actions have been removed and their equivalent operations are now performed in the background each time you interact with tasks in WorldServer. For example, when you open a task in Online Editor for the first time, an online asset is generated in the background and you can instantly start translating. Conversely, when you open the same task in Browser Workbench (after having opened it in Online Editor beforehand), the data is synchronized in WorldServer and the online asset or BCM document is deleted. This opens up tons of flexibility for large translation teams, giving them the option of working with tasks in Online Editor, Browser Workbench, or even desktop editors such as Trados Studio as part of the same human step.

A particular scenario that you should take into consideration is the following:
  • When you open all the tasks in a project in Online Editor, an online asset is generated for each task, even though only the first task is displayed.
  • When you close Online Editor and open the same tasks in Browser Workbench, only the first task becomes ready to use in Browser Workbench; the other tasks are still prepared for use in Browser Workbench. In this case, they become ready to use in Browser Workbench only after you switch to each of them individually.
To remind you to resume your in Online Editor, a green dot is displayed next to the Translate > In Online Editor option every time you select a task that you last opened in Online Editor. This is just a reminder, however, because you can still decide to alternate between Online Editor and Browser Workbench at any time.
A similar reminder with a yellow dot is displayed when you select multiple tasks, but only some of them have been opened last in Online Editor:
