Required upgrade information
Certain environment variables must be set in the pdm.cshrc and pdm.cshrc.ora files to properly upgrade and configure the Contenta server. Obtain the following information before beginning the Contenta Server upgrade.
Obtain the values for the following environment variables in the pdm.cshrc and pdm.cshrc.ora files.

| XYV_PDM_ROOT | Top-level directory where Contenta is installed. | |
| JAVA_HOME | Path to the directory where JRE is installed, such as the default, usr/java. If the directory for JRE is different, you can specify its path or a variable representing the path. | |
| sdlxysoft_LICENSE | If the Contenta License server resides on a separate machine, specify its node name. | |
| $PATH | Verify that this variable includes the following.

| XAPPLRESDIR | Path to the values for the pcmadmin drop down lists. Set this variable to $XYV_PDM_ROOT/distr/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults. | |
| XYE_PRTL_LOG_DIR | Path where Contenta will write the portal logs. The default value is $XYV_PDM_ROOT\logs\dbname.log | |
| XYV_LOG_PER_PORT | To add the socket (PcmPortal) number to the portal log filename, set this variable to 1. | |
| XYV_LOG_CYCLE | To cycle the portal log at midnight, set this variable to 1. | |
| LD_LIBRARY_PATH | Verify that this variable includes the following. {$XYV_PDM_ROOT}/system | |
| XYV_PDM_DATA_DIR | A valid directory path on the Contenta server. | |
| ORACLE_HOME | Path to the Oracle home directory. | |
| ORACLE_SID | Oracle database system identifier. | |
| XYE_PDM_DATABASE_SID | Oracle database system identifier. | |
| XYE_PRTL_DATABASE_SID | Oracle database system identifier. | |
| Server Socket | The portal server socket, which is a numerical value in the range 1024–4915. Unless it is explicitly changed, accept the default value of 6050. | |
| NLS_LANG | The Oracle Database Server character set must be set to AL32UTF8 during install. The NLS_LANG setting for the Oracle server and client must match, and the character set in NLS_LANG must be set to AL32UTF8 (that is, American_America.AL32UTF8 or ENGLISH_UNITED KINGDOM.AL32UTF8). |
Some of the previous information is also required when you upgrade the Contenta Explorer on client workstations. The following table lists additional information for upgrading Contenta Explorer:
