PDF settings

Settings for PDF file type (*.pdf files). The SDL file type software uses Framework Technology software from Solid Documents (www.soliddocuments.com) to convert PDF to Word. The translator edits the Word document and also saves the target file as a Word document.

Styles page

Specify which text is to be excluded from translation, based on the text's style. Text that is excluded is represented by a tag in the final document. You can choose whether this tag should be a structure tag or an inline tag.

OptionDescription
Layout
Flowing

This mode recovers page layout, columns, formatting, graphics, and preserve text flow.

Continuous

This mode uses page layout and columns analysis to correctly reconstruct the text order but will only recover paragraph formatting, graphics, and text flow. Use this mode when you need the content in the file but do not need to retain the exact layout of the document.

Exact

This mode uses Word text boxes to ensure that the text and graphic layout in the Word document is the same as the PDF file.

Image recovery
Automatic Anchoring

Anchor the image to the nearest paragraph or to the page using the automatically calculated offsets.

Anchor to Paragraph

Anchor the images to the nearest paragraph.

Anchor to Page

Anchor the images to the page using the automatically calculated offsets.

Remove Images

Remove all images that are not inline.

Headers and footers
Recover as headers and/or footers

Select to detect headers and footers and add them as MS Word headers and footers in the output file.

Place in the body of the document

Select if you want not to detect headers and footers. In this situation headers and footers will be handled as an ordinary text and will be placed into the document.

Remove

Select if you want to detect headers and footers but remove them from the output document.

Depending on the reconstruction mode different options are available. In Flowing mode, all headers and footers options are available. In Continuous mode , you can select Place in the body of the document or Remove.

Table detection

Detect Tables: if selected, the software recognizes PDF tables and creates MS Word tables from the recognized tables.

Recognize PDF text
These options control the conversion of symbols when there is missing or incorrect font encoding detected during the conversion process to Microsoft Word. Adjusting these options may help when the text or some symbols in the converted file look garbled. Choose one of the following:
  • Every characters - Apply optical text recovery to all text
  • Problem characters only - Let the application determine where optical text recovery is required
  • None - Turn off optical text recovery

Select the Use IRIS technology for optical character recognition to use IRIS OCR instead of Solid ICR for character recognition. IRIS supports a broader range of languages including Asian languages. When you first select this option, you will be prompted to install the IRIS PDF OCR Support for Studio add-on from the SDL AppStore. Click the link to the add-on from the Trados Studio prompt and follow the add-on installation instructions.

OptionDescription
Treat special characters as inline placeholder tags

Examples of special characters are non-breaking space, tab and discretionary hyphen. You can treat these characters as text or as tags. If you treat them as tags they are put into inline tags. Em dash and en dash are always treated as text.

Extract hidden text for translation

You can extract hidden text, or ignore it.

Skip complex scripts and Asian text font

This has an effect only on Microsoft Windows computers that have Asian language support installed.

If Asian text font is displayed, formatting information is provided by inserting a <cf> ('control formatting') tag in the output text. A large number of such tags can be distracting for translators.

If Asian text font is not displayed, Asian elements in the <cf> tags are switched off and superfluous <cf> tags are hidden.

Skip advanced font formatting

Include (or skip) advanced font formatting Advanced font formatting covers such features as character spacing (tracking, kerning) and line spacing (leading). You can include advanced formatting in the translation or ignore it.

Tip:

Advanced formatting is usually removed because you probably will need to reapply advanced formatting after translation, so including such formatting merely increases the number of tags displayed during translation.

Process files with tw4winMark style

Use this option to change the filters that SDL Trados Studio uses to open Word files which have the tw4winMark style defined. Consider enabling this option if you want Trados Studio to use the Word 2000-2003 filter (for *.doc files) or the Word 2007-2016 filter (for *.docx files) for these files instead of using the Bilingual Workbench filter.

This is relevant if you might have Word files which contain the tw4winMark style but which are not bilingual files.

The presence of tw4winMark style in Word files usually indicates that the file is a bilingual file, produced from Trados Translator's Workbench. So, by default, when a Word document has this style, Trados Studio will not use Word filters to process the file, but will use the Bilingual Workbench filter instead.

If you disable this option (the default setting) and the Bilingual Workbench filter processes a non-bilingual file that has this style defined, the filter will produce an empty *.sdlxliff file with no segments.

Extract Hyperlinks

Enable this to make all parts of the hyperlink element available to the translator, including the hyperlink itself.

Extract Alternative Text for translation

Alternative text corresponds to the Alt HTML attribute. You can extract alternative text for translation or skip it.

Apply Track Changes before opening

Choose how to handle documents with tracked changes. If this option is disabled, you will see the pending tracked changes.

If this is enabled the track changes are applied.

Extract custom numbering

Enable to process custom number format codes and make them available for translation.

Extract mathematical expressions

Extracts the mathematical expressions, Trados Studio provides an option for doing that which as default is unchecked.

Extract optional hyphens

The placement of discretionary hyphens is dependent on the structure and pronunciation of words in the source language, so usually you should choose to remove rather than extract them.

Extract contents of embedded Excel charts and sheets

MS Word allows the possibility to insert an Excel spreadsheet into a Word document. If this option is enabled, the embedded charts and spreadsheets are extracted.

Extract document properties for translationDo not extract

Does not extract any document properties for translation.

All document properties

Extracts all the document properties from the Summary and Custom tabs and makes them available for translation.

Summary

Extracts only the document properties from the Summary tab (title, subject, author etc.) and makes them available for translation.

Custom

Extracts only the document properties from the Custom tab and makes them available for translation.

When an issue with inline tags is foundUse source segment content

Choose this to copy the source sentence with all tagging into the target file if Trados Studio encounters issues with the inline tags.

Continue with errors

Choose this to skip saving a target segment in which Trados Studio encounters issues with the inline tags. Trados Studio continues with the next segment with no permanent error blocking the user form saving the target file.

Stop processing

This shows an error message and does not save the target file.

CommentsExtract comments for translation

Enable this to extract the content of a comment from the original source document and make it available for translation. The translated comment will appear in the final translated document.

Retain Studio target comments in target file

Any comments added to the target segments during translation will appear in the final generated document.

Contents ControlLocked content controls

Extracts for translation all the controls which have been set as locked. Content controls prevents editing or deleting parts of a document.

For example, your document might contain checkboxes or drop-down lists which the author set as locked, but you want to translate them anyway.

List item values

Extracts for translation the values of the control items. For example, the options in a drop-down list may have a value associated with it. This value is stored internally and in some cases you may need to translate this as well.
