The use cases provide examples of how to use Query Builder to modify predefined Entry Assets and create your own custom Entry Assets.
-
Making the query more concrete by adjusting the query parameter (Google AdWords Ads)
-
When you drag-and-drop a predefined Entry Asset into an Initiative, you can make it more concrete by adjusting the query parameter. For example:
-
- Open an Initiative.
- In the Entry Assets list, drag-and-drop Google AdWords Ads onto the canvas.
- Select the Asset and in the Assets properties, click Open the Entry Asset Query Builder.
- In the External referrer URL, enter the
destination URL of your ad (the exact URL to the page in your Web site where you want to send users to from your ad) in the adurl query parameter, for example http://www.sdl.com/en/wcm/products/sdltridion/:

-
Making the query more concrete by narrowing down the domains (Google Search)
-
When you drag-and-drop a predefined Entry Asset into an Initiative, you can make it more concrete by specifying multiple domains so that the query only matches against users coming from certain regions. For example:
-
- Open an Initiative.
- In the Entry Assets list, drag-and-drop Google Search onto the canvas.
- Select the Asset and in the Assets properties, click Open the Entry Asset Query Builder.
- In the External referrer URL, narrow down the list of domains to only
google.de or google.nl:

-
Checking whether a test referral URL matches (Google AdWords Ads)
-
Open an Entry Asset in Query Builder and check whether the test referral URL is a match. For example:
-
- Open an Initiative.
- In the Entry Assets list, drag-and-drop Google AdWords Ads onto the canvas.
- Select the Asset and in the Assets properties, click Open the Entry Asset Query Builder.
- Go to
google.co.uk and search on SDL Tridion.
- Inspect one of the ads and get the adurl from the query string.
- In the External referrer URL, enter the query adurl parameter, then paste the entire URL in the Check whether the URL matches field and click Match:

-
Defining query parameters to match channel (Custom Entry Asset)
-
When you create a Custom Entry Asset you can define query parameters to match the channel, for example to track what mobile device a user came from:
-
- Open an Initiative.
- In the Entry Assets list, drag-and-drop the Custom Entry Asset onto the canvas.
- Select the Asset and in the Assets properties, click Open the Entry Asset Query Builder.
- In the Query parameter to be matched, specify the parameters
Query Is channel=mobile and Query Is os=ios:

- Create another Custom Entry Asset and in the Query parameter to be matched, specify the parameters
Query Is channel=mobile and Query Is os=android:

-
Generating a URL for an Entry Asset (Twitter Tweets)
-
In an Entry Asset, you can generate the URL to use to promote your Web site on a social media Web site. For example:
-
- Open an Initiative.
- In the Entry Assets list, drag-and-drop Twitter Tweets onto the canvas.
- Select the Asset and in the Assets properties, click Open the Entry Asset Query Builder.
- In the Query parameter to be matched, enter the URL of your Web site landing page and click Generate to generate the

-
Defining a Custom Entry Asset to match the referrer URL (example 1)
-
Create a Custom Entry Asset to match the referrer URL, for example if you have a banner on a partner Web site specify the full URL of the page which it links to:
-
- Open an Initiative.
- In the Entry Assets list, drag-and-drop the Custom Entry Asset onto the canvas.
- Select the Asset and in the Assets properties, click Open the Entry Asset Query Builder.
- In the External referrer URL, specify
URL Contains http://www.sdl.com/nl/wcm/partners/select_partner:

-
Defining a Custom Entry Asset to match the referrer URL (example 2)
-
Create a Custom Entry Asset to match the referrer URL, for example to catch users that came from
ask.com and who searched on tridion or sdl:
-
- Open an Initiative.
- In the Entry Assets list, drag-and-drop the Custom Entry Asset onto the canvas.
- Select the Asset and in the Assets properties, click Open the Entry Asset Query Builder.
- In the External referrer URL, specify:
Domain Contains ask.com and
Query Contains q=tridion or
Query Contains q=sdl

-
Adding conditions to an Entry Asset (Google Analytics)

-
- Open an Initiative.
- In the Entry Assets list, drag-and-drop the Google Analytics onto the canvas.
- Select the Asset and in the Assets properties, click Open the Entry Asset Query Builder.
- Enter parameters used by Google Analytics:

You can specify Source, Medium, Term, Content, Campaign parameters:

utm_medium (required)—identifies a medium such as email or cost-per- click, for example: utm_medium=cpc.
utm_term—used for paid search to note the keywords for this ad, for example: utm_term=running+shoes.
utm_content—used to differentiate between ads or links that point to the same URL, for example utm_content=logolink or utm_content=textlink.
utm_campaign—used for keyword analysis to identify a specific product promotion or strategic campaign, for example: utm_campaign=spring_sale
Note: For more information, refer to the URL Builder Tool from Google Analytics.
- Click Generate Landing Page URL.
-
Defining a Referrer URL and Query Parameter
-
In the Entry Asset Query Builder you can define a query based on the External referrer URL and the Parameter to be matched. If you define both, the queries are handled as an OR condition where one or the other condition must be met.
-
For example, if you have a shortened display link on a
partner.com Web site which is redirected to a third-party site for resolving, you may lose the referrer URL. In that case, you can add a Parameter to be matched to catch where the link originated. The following example uses the gclid parameter which Google AdWords Ads automatically adds to the destination URL:
-
- Open an Initiative.
- In the Entry Assets list, drag-and-drop Google AdWords Ads onto the canvas.
- Select the Asset and in the Assets properties, click Open the Entry Asset Query Builder.
- Enter the
destination URL of your ad (the exact URL to the page in your Web site where you want to send users to from your ad) in the adurl query parameter, for example: http://www.sdl.com/en/wcm/products/sdltridion/
- Enable Query Parameter to be matched and specify a gclid parameter:

Note: Google AdWords Ads automatically add a gclid parameter to the destination URL to help provide Google Analytics tracking reports (if you select the Destination URL auto-tagging option in your account preferences). The parameter shows up in your landing page URL when a user arrives at your Web site from your ad. For example, if your site is www.sdltridion.nl, when a user clicks on your ad it will appear in the address bar as: www.sdltridion/?gclid=123xyz.
