Viewing post-editing distance reports

Post-editing distance (PED) is an indicator used to assess the quality of a machine translation (MT) provider or engine by measuring the changes from a starting point (usually a machine-translated segment) to an end point (usually a segment approved by a reviewer). Although post-editing distance is usually associated with machine translation, you can also use it in WorldServer to assess the quality of the content in a translation memory (TM) or of a human translation.

Before you begin

Make sure that the workflow used in your project includes the Calculate Post Editing Distance automatic action. The report is generated automatically in both HTML and XML format when the automatic action is executed. If the automatic action is included multiple times in the same workflow, a new report will be generated for each execution.

About this task

The report contains general information about the project and the task, as well as the following information about each segment in the file:
  • Segment No: The number of the segment in the text.
  • Match Origin: The origin of the segment. Possible values are: MT (the segment was translated automatically), TM (a match from a translation memory was applied), Interactive (the segment was last edited by a human translator), or None (no previous match was found).
  • Match Score: The quality of the match. Usually applies to TM matches.
  • Source Segment: The content of the source segment.
  • Target Segment: The initial content of the target segment; more often than not, the match retrieved from the TM or the machine-translated content.
  • Post Edited Target Segment: The content of the target segment after post-editing.
  • The score obtained when applying each algorithm selected in the automatic action. Expressed as decimals or as percentages.
